The increased industrialization, transportation facilities and pollution as a result of increased population is the dilemma of today’s world and individuals’ health is most endangered part of today’s sped up life. Unhealthy diet, imbalanced work schedules and unorganized lifestyles in urban areas and improper health facilities in rural areas are the prominent causes of health related issues across the globe. This is what World Health Organization identified in 1948 and marked 7 April as World Health Day. But the health issues now a day are so much complicated that a single day cannot resolve all of them. Every other day is needed to be marked as health day.

No doubt, WHO is doing great efforts to maintain a stable platform to address and resolve the health issues across the world; we need to do too many things at our own end. We all know that no organization can reach each and every part of the world, and so many deserving areas may be left untouched in these campaigns. We can play our part by taking a smaller initiative on any day to mark it as World Health Day, i.e. it can be any part of any day at your home, your school/university or work place where you can address the basic health issues within the community and coming up with solutions.

For an idea about activities for your health day, you can look into the themes of World Health Day in past few years and see what health issues exist in the community you’re talking to. Check out the themes from previous World Health Days and see what things can be addressed and resolved from each topic:

1- Mental Health: Stop Exclusion, Dare to Care: This was the theme of 2001’s world health day and aimed to care about people with emotional disorders. Do check out there’re too many people nearby you, who are emotionally upset. See how you can help them.

2- Shape the Future of Life: Healthy Environments for Children: Although it was targeted in 2003, the problem still persists. See, how badly we’re ruining the environment for our children. Take some step to keep your local environment healthy.

3- Protecting health from the adverse effects of climate change: There’re certain things you cannot change, i.e. the climate, but you can take precautionary measures. This was World Health Day’s theme for the year 2008. Check out what emergencies can be caused due to climatic change, i.e. overheating, extreme cold, floods etc, and organize a camp for people guiding them how to stay healthy during these situations.

4- Urbanization & Health; Make Cities Healthier: Cities are getting over crowded and as a result the health problems are increasing and health facilities are decreasing. Make this theme of 2010’s World Health Day and spread message across masses you know. Think of ideas with which you can make cities healthier or may be stop overcrowding!

5- Emerging Infectious Diseases: Although it was more than a decade back when in 2007 the World Health Day was themed for infectious diseases, you can still find too many such diseases in people nearby you. Make one such disease the topic and create awareness among people!

The major cause of indoor air pollution is the poor indoor air quality. The reasons for poor indoor air quality are various, but we’ll discuss the most common ones here.

According to a study, inadequate ventilation and the release of contaminants from indoor and outdoor sources are the primary reasons for indoor air quality problems.

People may be confused at “Inadequate ventilation”. Well, it may be insufficient air that is required to remove pollutants. Other factors that effect the air quality in a building are temperature, humidity, and microbial contamination.

One major reason for poor ventilation, i.e.the less supply of fresh air and excess of contaminated air in the building may be the early shutdown and late startup of a ventilation system. This normally happens in the working class, whereby the inhabitants of the house are out most of the time and when come back don’t bother to freshen the building with natural air.

Buildings that have been built to be more airtight to conserve energy, are the hub of air pollution. This is although an improved construction technique, but as it limits the amount of polluted air to escape, it’s not a good practice for health.
